i once heard that every time you recall a memory you lose the reality of what the original event was. my work explores this idea by gathering and abstracting objects collected from my experiences by drawing on textiles and paper.
my work is heavily built on my compulsions : think repetition. i have a tendency to over think and re-evaluate, and the method by which i make creates soothing routine and predictability. i draw using aqueous paint which lends itself well to playing with light and density with each crosshatched image. as i recall and render these objects, i celebrate the past and how it becomes abstracted and made new by the passage of time.
i work towards a visual language of remembrance by ‘clipping’ objects i have seen in my date to day from image research and from throughout my life and childhood moving around the united states. a common cement cemetery planter, a mosaic from the house of the tragic poet, lemon tree branches. while these objects hold significance for me, i hope that when someone encounters my work they feel a warm sense of deja vu, a peripheral thought of something from their past. i think i’ve seen this before, it was a little different but i’m glad i’m here now.
