how are your items sourced ?

my own line of clothing is grown, spun, woven, designed, patterned, cut, sewn, and naturally dyed in the united states.
more information here ~~

for my printed garment work, i source as sustainably and consciously as i can through companies // small brands // individuals that pay living wages and are made in the US.

it’s my goal to create a piece that can stand the test of time and improve with age :: i work really hard to find garments that prove to do this and to work with individuals who share these values. i try to source exclusively through smaller businesses local to my area or the us.

part of my practice is working towards building a healthy artist eco-system where we support and pay each other.

are these screen printed ?

if described as being hand-drawn, this means that i am drawing each piece of imagery by hand using fabric inks. i do have screen printed items, which are labeled as such. my printed t-shirts and sweatshirts, are printed using either water based inks or wood waste pigment from nature coatings.

why not use traditional screen printing inks ?

traditional carbon black, derived from petroleum, has long been a staple in various industries. however, it poses significant risks to both human health and the environment. this pigment contains carcinogens called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and results in millions of tons of CO2 emissions during its manufacturing process.

why use natural dye rather than conventional dyes ?

i choose to use dyes made from plants because they are free from many of the harmful chemicals (including pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals) that are used in the production of synthetically constructed or dyed materials and conventionally grown natural fibers. they are also rich in color and contain a different level of depth. the color is still alive, it actively changes and shifts with you depending on how you wear and care for it, this makes every piece unique to the wearer. it can be an unpredictable material, as nature is often unpredictable, but offers an opportunity to adjust our expectations and to slow down and appreciate the imperfection in life and nature.

can i wash my garment ?

i believe that natural dyes contain a different depth than conventionally dyed clothing, but it does require a little special care. i recommend hand washing inside out in cold water with an eco detergent and hang to dry in a shady spot. with natural dyeing, colors will fade if left in the sun, and some dyes may react to citrus. iron inside out with a hot iron when lightly damp. it can initially feel daunting but becomes second nature over time.
